9:30 AM – June 17: Parliament terminates state of emergency powers

Parliament has terminated the emergency powers handed to the government in March in response to the coronavirus epidemic.

The law submitted by Gergely Gulyás, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office, which required a two-thirds majority of lawmakers in attendance was approved with 192 votes in favor and no votes against. The date the emergency is lifted will be decided by the government.

09:45 – June 16: Hungary has successfully completed the first phase against the virus

The foreign minister said Hungary has successfully completed the first phase of implementing protection measures against the novel coronavirus epidemic, concentrating on healthcare.

Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said in parliament that the crisis had revealed areas where Europe must make progress and introduce changes, such as making sure that it is not dependent on external players in strategic areas.

09:20 – June 16: Over 65 shopping times to be reviewed on Wednesday

Chief Medical Officer Cecília Müller said the cabinet is expected to decide on Wednesday whether to amend the restrictions on shopping times reserved for people aged above 65. “The aim is to return to a normal course of life in this area, too,” she said.

09:30 – June 15: Hungary continues purchase of protective equipment

In a post on his Facebook page, the foreign minister said easing coronavirus-related restrictions must be coupled with continued purchases of protective equipment.

Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said that Hungary had received 2,800 lung ventilators and nearly 8 million face masks during the past week. He quoted WHO figures and said that a daily 100,000 new COVID-19 infections are reported worldwide.

09:15 – June 15: Hospital ban lifted

Chief Medical Officer Cecília Müller has lifted a restriction under which visitors were banned from hospitals due to the coronavirus epidemic. According to a statement from the National Public Health Center, the ban remains in force in wards were COVID-19 patients are being treated.

11:55 AM – June 11: Home quarantine rules relaxed for many new countries

During today’s Operational Group press conference, Róbert Kiss, Lieutenant Colonel of the Hungarian Police Force, reported that people can now enter Hungary from the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Serbia, Slovenia and from Friday Croatia without the need for compulsory home quarantine.
